Outreach event at Arkansas Tech University

Big shout out to Michael Burks and Mike and Ray Sizemore for their talk to a sociology class at Arkansas Tech University.  They discussed the current state of HIV in the state and in the country. They also had a chance to share their personal stories. The students were very receptive and had plenty of questions.  Education is key to helping stop the spread of HIV and in reducing stigma.

New Drug-Capsule Holds Promise for Weekly Dosing of HIV Meds

Researchers have developed a drug capsule that could allow people with HIV to take just one dose of antiretrovirals (ARVs) per week. Publishing their findings in Nature Communications, researchers built on a previous study in which they had designed a capsule that could remain in the stomach for two weeks, gradually releasing a malaria medication. First Antibody Treatment for Drug-Resistant HIV

New drug treatment: TaiMed Biologics has applied for approval from the FDA for the biweekly injectable antibody treatment ibalizumab for people with multidrug-resistant HIV. If approved, ibalizumab would be the first HIV treatment with a new way of attacking the virus to hit the market in 10 years, as well as the first-ever treatment not to require daily dosing. This gives hope for those of us who have run out of options.

Generic Truvada

In a move that has taken HIV advocates by surprise and stewed considerable confusion, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved a generic formulation of Gilead Sciences’ blockbuster antiretroviral (ARV) Truvada (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine). This decision could have major implications for the future cost of Truvada, to insurers and consumers alike.
