Responsible STD/HIV Testing – BOB in Little Rock

Bob’s disclaimer: I do not support HIV quick testing. While these tests might be nice for those who don’t like to give blood…they are NOT CONFIRMATORY, and they still require blood testing after. Additionally, they do not test for STDs, which can also be spread through same behaviours as HIV. Some of these tests require blood and some urine.

Having said that, we need to ensure individuals responsible for behaviours that put them at risk for STD/HIV/unwanted pregnancy, are also responsible for getting effective testing and treatment.

Based on reported difficulties with scheduling, processing, lack of treatment, and “embarrassment” at Arkansas Public Health facilities, I recently had a meeting with Arkansas Department of Health officials who assure me, it is their intent for individuals to be tested and treated with dignity, respect, and efficiency.

Therefore, I provide the following for advocates, family, and anyone that cares to ensure folks get appropriate testing and treatment.

If individuals participated in any of the following behaviours, I would encourage they get tested (understanding there is a incubation period, so if it was just last night, testing will not be effective). STDs and HIV are known to be transmitted by: semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk, contaminated needles, and transfusions outside the US.

1. First recommendation would be to go to attending physician and request testing.
– Understanding many individuals have not yet found a physician within their insurance
– Also understanding some physicians have yet to work with Regional AETC, AIDS Education and Training Center, to feel comfortable in treatment of their HIV positive patients
— If there is some viable reason not to request physician test for HIV/STDs, then another option would be

2. Go to the following link, find the Local Health Department district, click on the county, and review listing to call nearest Public Health Department and advise testing for STDs/HIV is requested.
– If an appointment is required, you will be advised
— If appointment is made, remember everyone is responsible for being ON TIME and being seen ON TIME

If there is a problem with ANY Public Health Department processing…I was requested to refer individuals to Renee House L.Renee.House@Arkansas.gov

If we use these methods to get folks tested and into effective treatment…we will have done our part in public health and advocacy…

Best, be safe, have fun, stay healthy and stress-free…God bless
